Join the Tagline Debate

As we expand our coverage to Rwanda, the Gorilla Highlands website is being re-organised and re-thought. Could you take part in choosing our new tagline?

The current tagline can be seen just under the logo at the top of this page. This is how it looks as a Google search output:

The problem with “trek volcanoes, track gorillas, tour the culture” is that it makes us look like a tour company. While we do offer travel solutions and will soon add online booking of activities, that is not exactly the point of the Gorilla Highlands initiative. Internet users’ attention span is measured in seconds and we just have to concisely communicate what we are about.

Let’s check how we summarised our goals in the latest Pocket Guide booklet:

– brand our region
– make it a destination on everybody’s mind
– give visitors reasons to spend more time
– assure that their stay benefits local people

Our tagline has to help achieve these goals. Here are some additional criteria for the tagline:

– as few words as possible; ideally it would fit into one line even on a small phone screen
– suitability for the general public; we want to talk to the international and the domestic tourist in the broadest sense
– clarity and descriptiveness; this gets priority over slogan-sounding expressions (that are not ignored)
– indication that we are not just about gorillas
– keywords that will help search engines

And a couple of extra suggestions:
– communicate safety and security
– indicate that we offer useful info hard to find online
– tap into the desire for new experiences
– remind the audience they deserve a break
– highlight that this is an off-the-beaten track area
– mention that the region allows slow, deeper travel
– stress authenticity and responsible travel

It is, of course, impossible for all of the above can be squeezed into a couple of words. Different taglines will inevitably focus on different aspects.

Below you will find 3 proposals. You can comment on them on Facebook or send your own solutions before 1 September 2016. The words “Rwanda and Uganda” appear in each of them to help define our new scope but they are not an absolute must.

1) serene yet action-packed region in Rwanda & Uganda

2) everything to do & everywhere to stay between Uganda & Rwanda

3) savvy traveller’s guide to the best of Uganda & Rwanda
