Lying in the hills east of Lake Bunyonyi, Kabale is not officially a “city” yet … but the word is, it’s happening. In June 2025 Uganda’s Deputy Speaker let it slip that the government had approved the upgrade. He casually dropped that gem while launching the 8.4 km/5 mi Kabale-Bunyonyi road. And trust us, that’s just one sign that this town’s stepping up!
WHERE TO SLEEP

From trucker lodges to posh hotels with pools and massages, Kabale’s got you sorted. Numba Cafe & Boutique Hotel in the very town centre may be the finest among them, with rooms from USD 55 B&B.
WHERE TO EAT

In one of the chilliest corners of Uganda, several cool eateries have popped up to save your fingers and appetite. For the best Indian flavours head to Cafe Bea, for a cozy backpacker atmosphere try the Gathering Place. Both with actual working Wi-Fi (not a myth, we promise).
WHERE TO SHOP

In addition to several well-stocked supermarkets (one even operating 24/7), Central Market is buzzing daily from 7am to 9pm. You’ll find fresh produce, second-hand gems, and buses nearby for your next escape. There are also more and more modern malls for tech bits, forex and banking.
WHERE TO DIVE INTO HISTORY
For a quick journey into the region’s past and present, Kabale Regional Museum at the beginning of the road to Bunyonyi is your place. You’ll see bits of Rwandan and Congolese influence too. Entry is USD 2 for adults, USD 1 for kids. Snacks and crafts are available for USD 2-10.
WHERE TO GO IN EMERGENCY
Kabale Referral Hospital had a USD 2.4 million makeover in 2023. With over 280 beds and skilled staff, you’ll be in good hands if anything goes sideways. Rugarama Hospital is a decent Anglican alternative, once an eye clinic but now a general provider of health services (including a dentist). For a more personalised, quick service consider one of the many private clinics.
Kabale’s ready for you, city status or not!
