The lake environment of Akagera National Park in northeastern Rwanda is magnificent and its campsites with electric fences are unique in the Gorilla Highlands region. Its fauna specials are the zebra, the giraffe and the rare roan antelope. Lions were introduced in 2015 while black rhinos returned in 2017 restoring the park’s Big Five status. There are also elephants, leopards, hippos, buffalos, eleven species of antelope and almost 500 different bird species. The diversity of wildlife and landscapes – a string of lakes to the east and rolling grassland hills to the west – make Akagera well worth visiting. It combines beautifully with Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park .

Mobility Issues? David Can’t Be Stopped!
Three years after he explored Uganda with us, David Azumbrado came back for more. This time he spiced up his travel days (and the lives of GHE Youth Spaces participants) with a presentation about using digital technologies. Once the volunteering day was ticked off, he hit the roads of Rwanda for real. He paid a…

Should We Go to Tanzania for Our Safari?
“After our hike in Uganda we may go for some days of a Tanzanian safari — does that make sense?” a future visitor just asked. Sure, the grandeur of the world-famous wildlife areas in Tanzania or Kenya is worth considering. But hordes of wildebeest tend to come with hordes of tourists, and that’s not very…

Made Especially for Nuša & Marko
When we say “tailor-made” tours, we mean it. For Nuša and Marko we created a circular route that joins Rwanda’s Akagera NP (pictured) with Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth NP. They liked it a lot but wanted it a bit more pocket-friendly. Fancy hotels thus turned into simple guesthouses, and even into camping in the savannah! Erecting…

Are Rwanda and Uganda Suitable for Travelling with Kids?
Travelling with children anywhere requires a little bit more planning and preparation. A safari with kids is no different, but it is certainly very possible. A trip to the Gorilla Highlands region need not be ruled out or put on hold until kids are older … A visit to Akagera National Park, like many typical…

Why is Akagera National Park So Expensive — And Where Does My Money Go?
OK, let’s talk about money … Safaris are probably not the cheapest holiday option. As well as your flights, accommodation, food and transport, you might also have game drives, park fees, and additional activities to budget for. There is also a whole mixed-bag of options when it comes to planning a safari. Whereas private reserves…

A Decade of Successes (and Personal Milestones) in Akagera National Park, Rwanda
Named for the Akagera river which winds from south to north — in and out of Rwanda and Tanzania along the eastern border of the park — Akagera National Park lies in the warmer, drier, lower-lying east of Rwanda. Although it hosts the Big Five again, its real advantage is in the spectacular scenery and…

Safari Time!
600mm, f/5, 1/640s, ISO160 Few people travel to the Gorilla Highlands region to go on safaris that don’t involve gorillas or chimpanzees, but maybe you should? This week we are presenting some truly excellent savannah destinations within a stone’s throw of those primates, so why not take the time to enjoy them? Two national parks…

Four-Legged Guardians
31mm, 1/250s, f/8, ISO250 My conservation and travel photography don’t always mix quite so readily as at Akagera National Park. Miha had asked me to spend some time here when the Gorilla Highlands region expanded to include all of Rwanda, and African Parks — the NGO in charge of the park — wondered if I…
