Gorilla Highlands Volunteering in Rwanda, Uganda and Congo

Gorilla Highlands volunteers building the organisation, improving cooking skills at Lake Bunyonyi, doing multimedia and teaching Batwa “Pygmies” English

Introduction

Wish to contribute your energy and skills to what Gorilla Highlands Experts do? Volunteer work is at the centre of our concept and everyone is welcome, from Uganda, Rwanda, Congo and abroad. Gorilla Highlands volunteering is about mixing international people and young East Africans, making small teams and learning from each other.

There are various volunteering options and volunteer jobs available:

Volunteering Options

Guest volunteer: Do you feel like enjoying Uganda’s gorgeous Lake Bunyonyi and Rwanda’s gateway to mountain gorillas without any obligations? Don’t know if you can commit just yet? Simply stay at Edirisa on Lake Bunyonyi and/or in at a our homestay in Musanze Town as a paying customer, and we will see where you can chip in. You can request the status of a guest volunteer or a specialist later on. Oh, and you can also do Learn From Africa without any need to commit!

We offer affordable accommodation, priced the same at Lake Bunyonyi and in Musanze:

camping in own tent: USD 4
camping in our fully-equipped tent: USD 6
dorm bed: USD 8
single/double room: USD 24

Core volunteer: You want to have a life outside of Gorilla Highlands volunteering? Believe that part-timing would be the best fit? No problem. As long as we can count on your help for a minimum of 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, we are happy to give you serious accommodation and food discounts. We do, however, expect you to go through 4 days of Learn From Africa first.

The longer your period of commitment, the more you will save. These are our daily discounted charges for accommodation and staff meals:

Specialist volunteer: Wanna go the whole way and become our staff member? Ready to put in at least 50 hours a week in your field of expertise? As long as you have specialist skills or local knowledge that we need, we will be glad to accommodate you and feed you free of charge. We still highly recommend that you participate in the Learn From Africa program as it will let you maximise your experience and contribution, but that is not a must.

Online volunteer: Can’t join us in Uganda or Rwanda? That’s unfortunate but it doesn’t mean that you can’t get involved! From social media marketing to graphic design to web development, a lot of essential work can be done from anywhere in the world. We would be thrilled to have you on (our Trello) board

Our Stories From Volunteer Life:

  • Milan vs. Bunyonyi: Not A Bad Start!

Milan vs. Bunyonyi: Not A Bad Start!

This is Milan, a student of UC Leuven-Limburg, who arrived at Edirisa on Lake Bunyonyi last month. Like others before him, he’s doing a 6-month internship that’s part of the “Global Citizenship and Development” course. We first sent Milan to a 2-day canoe tour with a friendly group of World Insight travellers from Austria and…

  • Volunteer’s Dilemma: Cause, Cash or the Girl?

Volunteer’s Dilemma: Cause, Cash or the Girl?

Stay in Africa to help, or return to Europe for paid work (and a girlfriend who misses you badly)? A dilemma that many a volunteer has faced before … but usually not just a few days after their arrival! Last month, that happened to Sifis Sareidakis, 25, a Greek computer analyst turned supply chain planner.…

  • Omushomesa’s Inspiration

    Omushomesa’s Inspiration

There’s Polona from Slovenia who likely doesn’t even know she has a namesake in Uganda! This volunteer stayed with us at Lake Bunyonyi from December 2007 to March 2008 … and in addition to all the good work she did, she also happened to inspire an omushomesa! Omushomesa? A literal translation is “teacher”, but in…

Partnership with Batwa “Pygmies”: Not the Easiest but Highly Impactful

Volunteering with Batwa “Pygmies”? Not the easiest thing in the world, yet potentially highly impactful! Londoner Edd had selected it from our long list of projects that had been waiting for the right person — and that’s how he found himself in a dugout with two Batwa delegates. The destination: BirdNest Resort, Lake Bunyonyi. There,…

  • Shattered Expectations

    Shattered Expectations

Anjni and Kalpa’s expectations were shattered within 24 hours. Rwanda greeted them with a neat airport, helpful and friendly officials, smooth roads, cleanliness, and no hassle whatsoever. Even people’s traditional attire wasn’t far from their own Indian heritage! The sisters live in Australia and America but they were born in Kenya, and they thought Rwanda would resemble their motherland much more…

Crazy: Burundi, Rwanda & Uganda’s Gorillas in Three Days

The collapsing swimming platform at Edirisa on Lake Bunyonyi has been rebuilt from scratch, courtesy of Wheeling2help! This volunteer organisation brings groups of Greeks and Cypriots to several countries, eager to make positive community impact. After several contributions to Bufuka Primary School — a new kitchen with school meals tops the list — they added…

  • Shiv’s Colourful Week in Rwanda & Uganda

Shiv’s Colourful Week in Rwanda & Uganda

Londoner Shiv loves music. He straight away sat in front of our tour minibus and took full advantage of the Bluetooth connection, playing mostly American hip hop and some R&B. That was the soundtrack of his one week in Rwanda and Uganda. His trip’s first upcountry destination was Musanze where he was to teach GHE…

In Photos: Pioneering Volunteer Adventure in Rwanda & Uganda

Today’s story will be the last for some weeks. Our home country Rwanda begins the annual commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi tomorrow. Where Differences Can Still Be Made

We were visited by Laura and Hannah from Austria last week … as they came to Uganda attempting to better understand their late friend Carla Weinzierl.“Cala” was our remarkable veteran volunteer and frequent returnee. She took her own life in Vienna in 2020. Before we get into anything else, there is one important message to…

What Should I Expect in Terms of Cultural Shock?

Culture shock is expected, and even welcome, when you exchange a life in the West for a dive into African life. But your culture shock will inevitably be quite personal.Considering that I’m a fresh Gorilla Highlands Experts intern that will stay in Uganda for six months, my very recent arrival puts me in a prime position to share my own…

  • A Night Out with My Wife … or $100 Spent Changing a Life?

A Night Out with My Wife … or $100 Spent Changing a Life?

The wind and wonder of discovery engulfed me as I held on to my motorcycle taxi driver, Kacumbe, the consensus king of boda boda drivers in the Kabale square where I had travelled in southwestern Uganda. We were on our way to Lake Bunyonyi, a mystical highland lake that would capture a decade of my life with its people…

“What’s a Gay?” and Other Ugandan Sexuality Questions

Weirdly enough, I didn’t sleep at all on the night of 31 May. I felt anxious, but I couldn’t put my finger on what exactly was happening, I guess. I felt all befuddled in the late morning, but a text from my friend Kelvin immediately woke me up. It said that 44 people got arrested…

  • Many Happy Returns

    Many Happy Returns

I’m Jon Lee, a consistent California connection, who has been writing, editing stories, and narrating videos for the Gorilla Highlands initiative for over a decade.I lucked into the discovery of these magical mountains. I was safely ensconced in a post-retirement life of plenty in a beach town, nursing an ember of long-ago third world adventure. I’d…

    Reflections from My Mirror

Travelling to another country or region and encountering the people of those places, always comes with its own particularities and challenges. As a graduated anthropologist I’m supposed to be quite literate about “different cultures”. At least that is what I used to say when people asked me what it actually means to study Social and…

  • How a Gracious Bird Taught Me a Lesson in Patience

How a Gracious Bird Taught Me a Lesson in Patience

Bunyonyi literally means ‘place of many little birds’, and everyone who has ever visited this lake in the southwest of Uganda, knows that that is not an exaggeration. From kingfishers who dive with their beaks straight down in the water, to the hamerkops waiting patiently on the riverbanks, to the gracious national pride of Uganda,…

  • Kampala, Here I Come!

    Kampala, Here I Come!

After my first month of exotic but basic living on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi I was ready for a deeper dive into Ugandan life. I’d occasionally visited the nearby town of Kabale for my supermarket needs or a change of environment, but I wanted to explore a bit. As someone who is used to…

  • People of the Gorilla Highlands Are Characters

People of the Gorilla Highlands Are Characters

Before my arrival to volunteer in Rwanda and Uganda there seemed to be one phrase that I was told that hung over me: The people of the Gorilla Highlands are characters. I didn’t know quite what this meant at the time, but now this one statement has defined my experience. And so, the only way I can…

The Man with Answers (Volunteer Life Part V)

I only had three months… What can you even do with that amount of time? Some people who stay in great resorts and love spotless bathrooms with food service might have a hard time. The scrappy, adventurous and enduring backpacker will say that it just isn’t enough. It seems that I’ve been thrown to the…

Hot Hot Kampala (Volunteer Life Part IV)

After many weeks of taking in the peaceful sanctuary of Lake Bunyonyi it was time to leave the nest… Just for a week though. • Hilarious Arrival (Volunteer Life Part III)

Hilarious Arrival (Volunteer Life Part III)

It was hilarious to arrive at Lake Bunyonyi. I got out of the car around 10pm, and came down the large, stone steps with just a flashlight on my phone. It seemed like all there was to this place was a fairly big building for dinner, a kitchen, and some dorms. It was really dark…
