Take advantage of the unique opportunity to be a special guest at Gorilla Highlands Silverchef, the 5th regional cooking competition and networking event! You will travel to Musanze (Rwanda) the last week of October to taste the best that Ugandan, Rwandan and Congolese chefs have to offer. You can even make some chef’s dream come true by voting for the people’s choice awards!

The GH Silverfoodie package will reveal both popular and lesser known treats, regional and international food in fancy restaurants and at budget eateries. You will be teased, tempted and tantalised with local delights, promising to keep you happily full throughout the journey.

Your guide will be Miha Logar, a Ugandan citizen born in Europe and based in Rwanda. After 20 years in the region he is just the man to sauté your senses and reveal the true taste of the Gorilla Highlands.

Program:

Day 1, Thursday, 24/10: Kampala – Mbarara

You won’t miss too much work, for we will depart at 5pm from the Kampala northern bypass. Our first delicious stop: the land of milk and … milk! We will touch down in Mbarara for a lavish traditional buffet that will kick off our culinary adventure in true style. The site of feasting and sleeping: Emburara Farm Lodge in the rolling hills just outside of Uganda’s second biggest city.

Day 2, Friday, 25/10: Mbarara – Musanze

Before breakfast you will get some quality time with the legendary Ankole cows (we certainly can’t leave the area without checking on them) and if you are adventurous enough you will even milk them. Next we will continue to the land of obushera. This sorghum beer will make you a believer … or not?

Captivating Lake Bunyonyi is the “place of many little birds” and – increasingly – many great meals. It’s known nationally for its crayfish and that will be the delicacy served at Edirisa on Lake Bunyonyi, cooked for you by a GH Silverchef candidate!

After lunch we will take the beautiful jaw-dropping drive to Kisoro for a coffee tour. It will be an impressive introduction to the culture and science of coffee drinking at a local farm with views of beautiful Lake Mutanda.

We will then cross the Rwandan border and stop at a factory that celebrates what the area is most famous for: “Irish” potatoes! The tour of the Winnaz Potato Chips plant will be led by the production manager who has been with the company from the very start.

We will settle at Virunga Hotel in the Musanze town centre, next to the lovely little Isange Restaurant with the best chicken in the region. Another special place, well within walking distance, is the main food market with ladies who pound cassava. Sombe, a cassava leaves specialty, is a meal that sings “Rwanda”.

And for those seeking a slice of adventure,  an optional side trip to Lake Burera will illuminate a fascinating night fishing session with the local fishermen!

Day 3, Saturday, 26/10: Musanze

You will be able to spend the morning relaxing or join Umuganda activities in the neighbourhood. It’s the last Saturday of the month, the time for Rwandans to come together in the morning to clean, repair and maintain.

Finally, the crescendo of the trip: sampling food at GH Silverchef 2019! Rwandan, Ugandan and Congolese chefs will each be cooking two dishes, using secret ingredients, and you will be judging them (and licking your lips).

As we have had too much meat already, lunch in Kigali will be at Preet, the only completely vegetarian restaurant in Rwanda. Let’s appreciate the culinary legacy of Asian immigrants who came to East Africa to build the railway a century ago.
