Well, this takes me back quite a few years! My first gorilla experience was actually in DR Congo, in Virunga National Park. I had just spent a few weeks in Uganda, where I met Miha and a few other members of the Gorilla Highlands team who are still part of the project today. I crossed the border into the DRC from Kisoro and spent the night camping near the gorillas.

It rained. And it rained. And then it rained some more. I won’t lie: the night was pretty miserable. I was cold and wet, and since the rain didn’t let up I had to cover my camera with a rain poncho and an umbrella. Seeing the gorillas was still magical, as it always is, though I don’t think I managed more than five or six photos — they clearly weren’t enjoying the weather either.

Still, there were one or two shots that I quite liked. Here, the rain had stopped for a few minutes, and these cheeky youngsters look like they just got out of the shower!
