Queen Elizabeth National Park is a handy addition to gorilla parks, lying in close proximity and offering abundant wildlife in a diverse ecosystem of sprawling savanna, humid forests and sparkling lakes. Rare tree-climbing lions live in its southern Ishasha sector, the part nearest to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and there are many other species: antelopes, buffalos, crocodiles, elephants, hippos, leopards, primates and more.
The one activity that cannot be missed is the Kazinga Channel launch trip (boat safari) with plentiful birds and other animals visible from the water. In nearby Kyambura Gorge one can also track chimpanzees — the least-guaranteed chimp viewing of our region but in a truly stunning natural environment!

Pedalling Uganda: From Lakes and Gorillas to Lions in Trees (Part 2)
… So, our three cyclists had crashed at Ruhija, a village on the rainforest edge. (If you’ve missed the start of their shenanigans, swing by Part 1). They woke up full of hope … and, being British, managed to size up the situation with a wry grin: here they were, in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park,…

When Her Life Rolls Out in Front of Her Eyes
When we organise trips for other tour companies, we never push to build relationships with the guests. It’s kinda unprofessional; their clients are their clients and their brand is their brand. But when one of last month’s travellers tagged an image on Facebook because she had enjoyed our home-made lunch so much, we reached out…

Queen Elizabeth Moonshot
Mojca had been looking for the moon in Africa’s pitch-dark skies right from the very moment she landed in Kigali. The stars were plentiful, but oddly never accompanied by the Earth’s more luminous natural satellite. And yesterday she finally spotted it, a full week later — and, very poetically, somewhere above the “Mountains of the…

Should We Go to Tanzania for Our Safari?
“After our hike in Uganda we may go for some days of a Tanzanian safari — does that make sense?” a future visitor just asked. Sure, the grandeur of the world-famous wildlife areas in Tanzania or Kenya is worth considering. But hordes of wildebeest tend to come with hordes of tourists, and that’s not very…

SABA Episode #4 — Driving in Queen Elizabeth NP & Why Is Africa Poor?
The fourth episode of our weekly SEE AFRICA BREATHE AFRICA podcast is, as always, preoccupied with the questions you send us. In the first segment, Kahiri and Miha have many provocative, critical and inspiring things to say as a reply to the following: It’s crazy how many African countries are insanely rich with natural resources…

Should I Expect Very Basic Accommodation Facilities?
120mm, f/8.0, 1/250s, ISO250 Hotels in the Gorilla Highlands region range from cheap and very, very basic — though rarely dirty — to the kind of opulence you would expect to be able to find in most big cities. Outside of urban areas, however, hotels probably aren’t where you want to spend your nights when…

When Lions Ate Letters
Lions used to be common in the lower altitudes of the Virunga volcanoes but are now are locally extinct, along with the leopard. Historically they gained a bad reputation as man-eaters around the Western Rift Valley (our members can learn more about the Rift Valley in the In-Sights). The two lions that infamously attacked railway…
